Rep. Jim Costa, a Fresno Democrat, said that President Donald Trump’s address to Congress on Tuesday night “sowed division instead of proposing solutions.”
Over on the other side of the aisle, Rep. Vince Fong, a Bakersfield Republican, praised Trump for outlining “his common sense vision to address the challenges and secure the opportunities of our great nation.”
Same speech. Two polar opposite reactions. Did you expect anything different?
The television cameras zeroed in on Costa during Trump’s 90-minute speech perhaps because of the congressman’s strong support for Ukraine and its president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in its three-year war effort to repel the invading Russians.
The only time any Democrats applauded Trump’s remarks came when he announced that Ukraine wanted to restart peace negotiations. And, Costa was among those clapping.

Costa: ‘Americans Don’t Need More Political Games’
Costa had plenty to say about the Trump administration’s performance in a series of X posts.
“Grocery prices are up, the stock market is down, and healthcare is on the chopping block,” Costa said. “Americans don’t need more political games — they need robust, bipartisan solutions to address these challenges.”
The veteran lawmaker also criticized the Trump tariffs, labeling them “a tax on American consumers and producers!”
Referencing the administration’s cuts to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, he said, “Nearly $3 million in federal funds are being withheld from farmers in my district. The ripple effects are felt across communities, leading to higher food costs and disruptions in our food supply chain.”

Fong: President’s Vision Aligns Perfectly With My District
In contrast, Fong praised Trump in an X post, noting that the president’s vision encompasses issues important to his district, whose economy is powered by oil and agriculture.
“President Trump has taken bold action to secure our borders, unleash our nation’s energy potential, increase water resources throughout the Central Valley, and strengthen national security,” Fong said. “These issues are top priorities within my district — a region that proudly powers California and feeds the nation.”
Added Fong: “Together with President Trump and my House Republican colleagues, we will continue to enact legislation to protect vital programs, get our fiscal house in order, and renew the American Dream for a stronger, safer, more affordable Central Valley.”
Valadao Brings Kings County Supervisor as Guest
Rep. David Valadao, R-Kings County, brought Kings County Supervisor Doug Verboon as his guest for the speech.
Valadao issued this statement afterward:
“(The President) spoke about enriching our economy, bringing down costs for hardworking families, and restoring American energy independence. The President also highlighted the importance of our agricultural sector and keeping our communities safe by securing the border and stopping the flow of fentanyl. These are critical issues, and I remain committed to working with the President and my colleagues in Congress to deliver real results for the Central Valley by reinforcing essential programs that support our families, growing our local economy, and ensuring our producers have the resources they need to thrive.”
