Quick-thinking neighbors and responding officers rescued an elderly woman from a burning home in northwest Fresno on Sunday evening, the Fresno Police Department said in a statement.

At approximately 5:30 p.m., personnel were dispatched to a residence near Holland and Cecilia avenues, west of Highway 99, after neighbors reported smoke and an occupant possibly inside the home.

According to witnesses, neighbors noticed smoke coming from the house and knew an elderly woman lived there.

Two neighbors worked to break the front living room window and attempted to enter the residence.

One neighbor found the woman in her bedroom and began dragging her toward the window but was forced to retreat due to heavy smoke, authorities said.

When officers arrived, they spotted the woman inside the living room, near the window. One officer entered the home to assist. Together, they managed to pull her to safety through the window.

Fire crews arrived shortly later and extinguished the flames. Fire personnel said the woman likely would not have survived without the efforts of her neighbors and officers.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
