The U.S. presidential Tuesday election has sparked a surge in interest among Americans looking to move abroad, according to Forbes.

And while political tensions are a factor, many are seeking improved quality of life, lower living costs, and cultural experiences.

Surge in Inquiries for International Relocation

Marco Permunian, founder of Italian Real Estate Lawyers, reports receiving “an inquiry every three minutes” following the election results. However, the motivations for relocating extend beyond politics. Daniella Florez, who is moving to Albania, explains, “While there are many wonderful aspects of the United States, the quality of life I seek are personally not attainable for me here.”

Michelle Garabito, cofounder of The Lux Nomads, emphasizes the benefits of living abroad: “Moving abroad has truly been about healing myself, finding a better quality of life and embracing incredible cultures.”

Popular destinations for American expats include Spain, Albania, Italy, France, Portugal, Vietnam, and others. Each country offers unique advantages, from Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa to Portugal’s Golden Visa program.

Careful Planning Required for Successful Relocation

However, experts caution that moving abroad requires careful planning. Alex Ingrim, a financial advisor, warns, “Moving for political reasons rarely leads to a sustainable move.” He advises considering legal residency, tax implications, cost of living, and other practical factors before making the leap.

Despite the challenges, many Americans are finding that relocating offers opportunities for personal growth, cultural immersion, and improved quality of life.
