Jimmy Cervelli, 49, of Fresno was arrested Friday night following a high-speed chase that ended in a dramatic crash at the intersection of Palm and Sierra avenues, the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

At approximately 8:32 p.m., a deputy attempted to pull over a vehicle near Shields and Hughes, but the Cervelli refused to stop and sped away.

The pursuit took Cervelli through several neighborhoods in the Fruit and Gettysburg area at moderate speeds, authorities said. At one point, he let two passengers out of the car before continuing north on Palm.

The chase escalated when, at 8:46 p.m., Cervelli ran a red light at Sierra Avenue, colliding with a Lexus SUV traveling east.

The authorities reported that two occupants of the Lexus, a man and a woman, were able to walk away from the accident with only mild pain.

Authorities said that the impact sent Cervelli’s vehicle careening into a fire hydrant. It then clipped a power pole and struck a tree before finally coming to a halt on Palm Avenue.

Deputies approached the wreck and coaxed Cervelli out of his vehicle, placing him under arrest without further incident.

He was transported to a local hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during the crash before being booked into the Fresno County Jail.

His bail is set at $80,000.

Cervelli, who has an extensive arrest record, was on parole at the time of the incident. He has previously served time in prison for convictions of burglary and grand theft, according to authorities.
