During an interview, Reza Pahlavi suggests that the Iranian people, along with a newly united opposition, should capitalize on the splintering within Iran’s leadership, with assistance from the United States and Europe.
Reza Pahlavi, the son of Iran’s last shah, has joined forces with other prominent Iranian opposition figures to create a common charter for a future democratic Iran. The group is working on addressing the minimal conditions that the majority of secular democratic forces can agree upon. The charter will be finalized soon and sent for approval to the Iranian people.
Pahlavi is calling for Western countries, including the U.S. and Europe, to help Iranians fight for their freedom by providing access to internet, creating a strike fund for workers, and targeting the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to go after specific individuals and their assets abroad.
Pahlavi believes that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) is the biggest instrument of repression in Iran and is the backbone of the regime’s leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. There are already splinters within the regime affecting the IRGC, and Pahlavi is calling for more support from the West to help Iranians capitalize on the fractures within Iran’s leadership.
Pahlavi says he does not necessarily plan to return as a monarch, he says, as his interest lies in helping with the cultural change towards democratic norms. Pahlavi is optimistic that the younger generation of Iranians is proactive and will fight for their freedom.
