Vice President Kamala Harris is narrowing the gap with former President Donald Trump in Iowa, trailing by just 4 points, according to a new Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll reported by Newsweek.

This follows an Emerson College poll that highlighted competitive races in both Florida and Texas.

The survey, conducted Sept. 8-11, shows Trump leading Harris 47% to 43%, with a margin of error of 3.8 points. Pollster J. Ann Selzer noted the race has tightened significantly in the typically Republican state.

Trump won Iowa by nearly 10 points in 2016 and 8 points in 2020. However, recent polling suggests a shift, with Harris closing the gap in traditionally conservative states.

This comes after President Joe Biden’s decision to bow out of the race in July and endorse Harris, spurring changes in the polls.

While national surveys show Harris slightly ahead of Trump, the Cook Political Report still rates Iowa as “solidly” Republican.

However, the new polling indicates the state may be more competitive than previously thought.
