Fresno Unified’s foundation has a new name that its leaders believe will better reflect its focus on funding opportunities for students such as scholarships and professional clothing.

And the new name will come with a new opportunity to help with those fundraising efforts.

The Foundation for the Fresno Unified School District is now the Foundation for Fresno Unified Students.

“Leading this Foundation is an honor, especially as we collaborate with Fresno Unified and our community to uplift our students,” Wendy R. McCulley, the Foundation’s executive director, said in a news release. “While our name is changing, our dedication to the students and the district remains focused. This foundation’s entrepreneurial spirit is aimed at driving us to forge new pathways and shape a brighter future for the next generation.”

The name change reflects increasing support for students, such as these recent accomplishments:

  • More than $400,000 in scholarships awarded to Fresno Unified students this past year.
  • More than 5,000 items collected during this year’s Suit Drive that helps graduating seniors look sharp for job interviews, internships, and college opportunities.
  • Partnered with the Do Something nonprofit to analyze student mental health and access to resources.

The foundation’s first-ever annual report includes information about these and other activities and is available on its website.

Noir Fundraiser Will Be at Warnors

The foundation’s largest fundraising event, Noir, will feature the Grammy-nominated orchestral duo, Black Violin. Black violinists Wil Baptists and Kev Marcus use their talents to break down art stereotypes, and Fresno Unified educators have often used their videos for cultural proficiency training.

Noir will be held at 7 p.m. Oct. 16 at the Warnors Theater in downtown Fresno.

The gala will be transformed with this performance to offer a different experience for students and donors. Tickets start at $49 and can be purchased at Ticketmaster.

The foundation also is seeking sponsors so Fresno Unified orchestral students can attend as guests, free of charge. To help sponsor the event, email eric.maul@fresnounified.org.
