A driver was arrested Thursday night after allegedly fleeing a traffic stop in Fresno and later being determined to be driving under the influence, police told GV Wire.

Officers attempted to stop Arturo Covarrubias about 10:12 p.m. near Tulare and M streets after seeing a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed and failing to stop at two red lights, police said.

The vehicle did not stop when officers attempted to pull it over, and Covarrubias allegedly drove recklessly before stopping in the 2200 block of South Elm Avenue.

Police said Covarrubias ran from the vehicle, but officers surrounded the area and took him into custody.

Officers said Covarrubias smelled of alcohol and had bloodshot, glossy eyes. Following a DUI investigation, officers determined he was driving under the influence. Open beer cans also were found inside the vehicle, police said.

Covarrubias was booked into the Fresno County Jail.

Police said the portion of the report containing information about any blood-alcohol test or blood test had not yet been completed at the time of publication.
