Gracey Elementary School was briefly placed on lockdown Thursday morning after a suspect fled from a nearby residence, the Merced Police Department said.

Officers were called to a residence near the school at about 7:30 a.m. When officers arrived, the suspect fled the residence.

Police said Gracey Elementary was placed on lockdown out of caution to help protect students and staff while officers searched for the suspect.

The suspect was arrested shortly afterward and taken into police custody.

The lockdown was lifted, and normal operations at the school resumed, police said.

Police did not list any charges or give any additional information about the suspect.
