Two people were transported for medical evaluation Friday after a fire broke out in the garage of a Visalia home, according to the Visalia Fire Department.

Firefighters responded to the home at about 11:05 a.m. and quickly worked to contain the fire, the department said. All residents were safely outside the home before firefighters arrived.

An off-duty Avenal assistant fire chief was the first to arrive and helped victims safely exit the home before additional crews reached the scene, according to the department.

A second grass fire was also reported at St. John’s, adding to the emergency response in the area.

Firefighters remained at the structure fire Friday afternoon to ensure the blaze was fully contained.

Stover Street was closed at Douglas and Cecil avenues while crews worked. Drivers were asked to avoid the area and give emergency personnel room to operate.

The cause of the structure fire remained unknown.
