A man wanted in connection with a felony stalking case was fatally shot by law enforcement officers Thursday following a vehicle pursuit in San Luis Obispo County, authorities said.

San Luis Obispo County sheriff’s deputies initially attempted to contact the man while he was inside a vehicle in a Paso Robles parking lot, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said the man accelerated backward, struck a sheriff’s patrol vehicle, and sped away, prompting a pursuit.

The pursuit continued north on Highway 101 before the man turned around near Mission Street in San Miguel and began traveling south, authorities said. Deputies attempted several times to deploy a spike strip.

As the vehicle approached Paso Robles, the Sheriff’s Office terminated the pursuit because of safety concerns and deputies lost sight of it.

Authorities said the man later crashed on Highway 101 and stopped along the side of the highway near the Niblick Road overpass in Paso Robles.

Deputies and a member of the Sheriff’s Office Crisis Negotiation Team attempted to contact the man, who remained inside the vehicle.

The man then exited the vehicle and pointed a handgun at sheriff’s deputies and Paso Robles police officers, authorities said. Shots were fired, and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Three Paso Robles police officers and two sheriff’s deputies were directly involved in the shooting, according to the Sheriff’s Office. No law enforcement officers were injured.

The Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit and Professional Standards Unit will investigate the incident. The California Highway Patrol will conduct a concurrent investigation.

Authorities said there is no threat to the public.

The investigation remains active, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
