Visalia police arrested a 32-year-old man Wednesday in connection with a hit-and-run collision that killed a bicyclist over the weekend, authorities said.

Antonio Gaona Vasquez was arrested in the 200 block of Perez Street in Visalia and booked into the Tulare County Adult Pre-Trial Facility on suspicion of felony hit-and-run resulting in death, according to the Visalia Police Department.

The collision happened about 7:48 p.m. Sunday near Ferguson Avenue and Dinuba Boulevard.

Officers responding to the scene found an adult male bicyclist lying in the roadway. He was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver involved had left before officers arrived.

Police initially asked the public for help locating a maroon sedan with front-end damage believed to have been involved in the collision.

The department’s Traffic Unit took over the investigation and began working to identify the vehicle and driver.

Investigators said surveillance video captured a Honda about five minutes after the collision traveling near Houston Avenue and Santa Fe Street, away from the crash area.

The vehicle had extensive damage to the passenger side of the windshield and hood that police said was consistent with a significant collision.

Investigators identified a license plate associated with the vehicle and used Flock and Axon automated license plate reader systems, along with surveillance video and other evidence, to track the vehicle’s movements and identify the suspect vehicle.
