State Sen. Aisha Wahab says she has become the latest target of American Israel Public Affairs Committee-backed political spending as outside groups pour millions into California’s East Bay congressional runoff, Politico reported.

Super PACs, including two affiliated with AIPAC, have spent more than $5 million opposing Wahab and supporting fellow Democrat Melissa Hernandez ahead of the Aug. 18 special election for the seat formerly held by Eric Swalwell.

United Democracy Project, an AIPAC-backed PAC, disclosed spending $1.2 million, including $800,000 on ads attacking Wahab.

Bold America PAC, which has received major contributions from an AIPAC-funded PAC, has spent more than $555,000 criticizing Wahab’s public safety voting record and more than $1.6 million backing Hernandez.

Wahab, who won the June primary by 26 percentage points, said the spending stems from her efforts to condemn the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and called attacks on her record “misinformation.”

Hernandez’s campaign says the criticism centers on Wahab’s votes involving public safety legislation.

AIPAC Spends $32 Million in Failed Bid to Derail El-Sayed

Meanwhile, AIPAC is a pro-Israel organization that exerts considerable influence over U.S. foreign policy and politics. It spent $32 million in an unsuccessful effort to defeat Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan’s recent Democratic Senate primary.

The New York Times reports that the group now appears willing to put tens of millions of dollars behind Mike Rogers, the Republican, in the November run-off against Abdul El-Sayed.
