A man shot by a Fresno County sheriff’s deputy following a physical struggle Tuesday evening has been identified as Juwan Priddie, 24, of Santa Maria, authorities said Wednesday.

Priddie remains hospitalized in critical condition and has been electronically booked into the Fresno County Jail. His bail has been set at $100,000, according to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office.

He is facing charges of attempted burglary, resisting arrest with violence, obstructing an officer, making death threats, assault, battery on a police officer, and battery causing serious injury.

The shooting happened after a deputy responded around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday to a home near Olive and Cornelia avenues, where authorities said a man had broken down a front door while people were inside before fleeing the scene.

About 20 minutes later, while investigating that incident, the deputy was dispatched to a home on Garfield Avenue, south of Shields Avenue, where a man matching the same description was reportedly threatening to kill residents and refusing to leave.

The deputy contacted the suspect next to a white work van with a ladder rack. Authorities said the deputy and the suspect became involved in a physical struggle before the deputy fired his weapon, striking the suspect.

Additional deputies provided medical aid until emergency personnel arrived. The deputy was treated at a hospital for minor injuries.

The sheriff’s office said there are no further updates to the investigation at this time.
