A Fresno man has been sentenced to eight years and six months in federal prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, federal prosecutors announced Monday.
Patrick Kasper, 33, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Troy L. Nunley, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of California.
Court records show Kasper failed to yield during a traffic stop on March 16, 2022, leading law enforcement on a vehicle pursuit at speeds exceeding 110 mph. Authorities said he stopped at a residence and ran inside, leaving behind a loaded Smith & Wesson M&P 40 Shield .40-caliber pistol containing seven rounds of ammunition.
Prosecutors said Kasper has five prior felony convictions, including possession of a controlled substance for sale, being a felon in possession of a firearm and domestic violence. As a convicted felon, he is prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition.
The Fresno Police Department and the FBI investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Arelis M. Clemente prosecuted it.
