Authorities have identified the man killed in a deputy-involved shooting last week and said a woman who had been reported missing during the investigation was later found safe.
The Madera County Sheriff’s Office said the shooting occurred Friday after deputies responded to reports of a residential burglary in progress and a man carrying a crowbar who was charging toward passing vehicles.
According to the sheriff’s office, a deputy contacted the suspect, who became combative during the encounter and took the deputy’s TASER. Authorities said the suspect deployed the TASER against the deputy, embedding both probes in her body.
As the struggle continued, multiple callers reported that the deputy and suspect were fighting on the ground and that the suspect appeared to be attempting to take the deputy’s firearm. Several citizens stopped to assist the deputy, but the suspect continued the assault and attempts to gain control of the weapon, the sheriff’s office said.
The deputy then fired her service weapon, striking the suspect. Life-saving measures were provided, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene, the sheriff’s office said.
The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office conducted the coroner’s investigation and identified the deceased as Gregory Simon Anguiano, 42.

Investigators said they located Anguiano’s Ford Escape west of Gaston Road near an orchard and recovered his cellphone near Avenue 12 and Gaston Road.
During the investigation, detectives learned that Anguiano’s wife, Claudia Anguiano, had not been seen since June 15 after being released from custody in Whittier on a domestic violence-related charge in which Gregory Anguiano was identified as the reported victim. Family members told investigators her lack of contact with her children was unusual.
The sheriff’s office had asked for the public’s help locating Claudia Anguiano, but authorities reported Tuesday that she had been found.
Investigators also determined that Gregory Anguiano was in Moreno Valley on Thursday and that his vehicle traveled through Gilman Hot Springs before returning toward Whittier later that night.
Under California law, the California Department of Justice is conducting an independent investigation into the shooting because the death involved a person who was not armed with a deadly weapon at the time of the incident, the sheriff’s office said.
The investigation remains ongoing.
