One person was killed and three others were wounded in a shooting Wednesday evening in the parking lot of Fairfield High School in Northern California following a graduation ceremony, police said.
Fairfield police responded to the shooting at about 7:15 p.m. after the Sem Yeto Continuation High School graduation ceremony had concluded.
Four people were struck by gunfire, according to the Fairfield Police Department. Three victims, ages 11, 20, and 25, suffered nonfatal gunshot wounds. An 18-year-old victim died from injuries sustained in the shooting.
Police said a rumor circulating on social media that the 11-year-old victim had died was false. The child is recovering at a local hospital, police said.
Authorities have not released the identities of the victims, citing the need to notify next of kin and protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation.
The graduation event drew approximately 1,000 attendees, leaving hundreds of potential witnesses to the shooting. Detectives are working to identify and interview witnesses and are pursuing investigative leads, police said.
No additional details about suspects or a possible motive were released.
