A 26-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of felony child abuse after deputies said a child was found nearly unconscious inside a vehicle Friday afternoon.

Merced County sheriff’s deputies responded May 15 to a residence in the 2400 block of Beachwood Drive in Merced after receiving a report of a child left in a car, according to the Merced County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said the child was found by a Child Protective Services employee conducting follow-up at the residence related to previous allegations of neglect.

The child was sweating heavily and appeared almost unconscious, deputies said. After receiving medical care, the child was placed in the care of a family member.

The child’s mother, identified by authorities as Elizabeth Arms, was arrested and booked into the Merced County Jail on suspicion of felony child abuse.

Sheriff’s officials said the outcome could have been far worse if the child had not been found in time.

Authorities also warned that temperatures inside vehicles can rise to dangerous levels within minutes, even on mild days.
