Clovis police and state agents arrested 27 people during the five-day Clovis Rodeo for alcohol-related violations, authorities said.

Officers with the Clovis Police Department and agents from the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control conducted enforcement operations throughout the event, including a “Trap Door” program aimed at detecting minors using false identification at bars and clubs.

Five of the arrests involved fake IDs. Other violations included public intoxication, minors in possession of alcohol, furnishing alcohol to a minor, and one arrest for driving under the influence, police said.

Under the “Trap Door” program, bar and club staff who verify IDs alert officers when they suspect a fake. Officers then contact the individuals presenting the identification. Participating officers are trained in recognizing false IDs.

Authorities said penalties for possessing or using a false ID include a $250 fine, 32 hours of community service, and a one-year driver’s license suspension.

Officials cited data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration showing drivers under 21 face a higher risk of being involved in crashes, with about 25% of fatal crashes involving underage drinking.

The enforcement effort was funded through a grant from the ABC Alcohol Policing Partnership program.
