A federal grand jury has indicted two men on fentanyl trafficking charges after authorities say they were found transporting 3 kilograms of fentanyl powder through Fresno County, U.S. Attorney Eric Grant announced.

Santos Eliodo Irias Lobo, 36, of El Salvador, and Dariel Antonio Florentino Moncada, 21, of Honduras, are charged with conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute fentanyl, as well as possession with intent to distribute fentanyl.

According to court documents, on April 11, the two men were traveling through Fresno County on Interstate 5 toward Oakland when law enforcement officers stopped their vehicle for speeding and other traffic violations.

Authorities said Lobo was driving and presented vehicle registration along with an El Salvador identification card bearing another individual’s name. Lobo later consented to a search of the vehicle, where officers discovered three 1-kilogram packages of fentanyl powder that were reportedly destined for Oakland.

If convicted, the defendants face a mandatory minimum of 10 years in prison and a maximum penalty of life in prison, along with fines of up to $10 million.
