Fresno police issued 114 citations to drivers for violating hands-free cell phone laws during a distracted driving enforcement operation conducted on Saturday, authorities said.
California law, in place since 2008, prohibits drivers from holding a phone or other electronic device while operating a vehicle. The restriction applies to activities including talking, texting, or using apps while driving, police said.
Violating the hands-free law can result in a fine. A second offense within 36 months of a prior conviction carries an additional penalty, adding a point to the driver’s record.
Police urged drivers to pull over to a safe location if they need to make a call or program directions. Officials also recommend silencing phones or placing them out of reach before starting a trip.
The enforcement effort was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
