With long-time Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban in a heated election battle, Israel could lose a reliable European ally if the far-right populist were to lose, Haaretz reported.
On April 12, Hungary’s parliament will decide between continuing Orban’s 16-year governance or handing control of the government to EU-friendly Peter Magyar.
Magyar, who broke from Orban’s Fidesz party in 2024, has said he prioritizes relations with the EU, which could represent a “fundamentally different approach” to Israel, Haaretz reported.
This potential shift in Hungary’s alliances comes as many European countries have vocally chosen to stay neutral in Israel’s conflicts with Iran and its proxies.
Political scholars, however, say if elected, Magyar would likely take many of Orban’s stances, given the country’s politics.
President Donald Trump has openly endorsed Orban, and Vice President JD Vance this week went to Budapest to campaign for the leader.
