An adult woman was killed and another driver was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving after a two-vehicle crash Friday evening in Fresno County, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash happened about 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of Clovis and North avenues, where officers responded to reports of a collision with major injuries.
Emergency crews arrived to find an adult female passenger critically injured. Paramedics performed life-saving measures, but she was died at the scene.
Investigators said a Ford Expedition was traveling north on Clovis Avenue and entered the intersection against a red light. At the same time, a Mercedes-Benz CLA250 was traveling west on North Avenue.
The vehicles collided in the intersection, causing major damage to both. The Ford came to rest in the center divider of Clovis Avenue, while the Mercedes left the roadway and stopped in an orchard at the northwest corner of the intersection.
The driver of the Mercedes, Wilmer Alvarez-Leiva, 23, was determined to be under the influence of alcohol and was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
The driver of the Ford suffered moderate injuries and was taken for medical treatment.
Despite the DUI arrest, investigators said the driver of the Ford is believed to be the primary cause of the crash for failing to stop at the red light.
The crash remains under investigation.
