The Fresno Police Department will conduct a focused enforcement operation on Saturday, targeting drivers suspected of violating the state’s hands-free cell phone law.

Under current California law, drivers are prohibited from holding a phone or electronic communications device while operating a vehicle.

This includes talking, texting, or using apps. Violations can result in fines, and a second offense within 36 months adds a point to a driver’s record.

Police urged drivers to pull over to a safe spot if they need to make a call or program directions. Officials also recommended silencing phones or placing them out of reach before driving.

Funding for the program comes from a grant through the California Office of Traffic Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
