The California Highway Patrol is reminding residents that off-highway vehicles, including ATVs, UTVs and dirt bikes, are not designed for paved roadways and are illegal to operate on public roads.
According to CHP-Hanford, OHVs are intended for off-road terrain and riding them on public streets or highways is both hazardous and frequently leads to fatal crashes.
CHP said OHVs are prohibited from traveling on either the paved portion of a roadway or its shoulder. Riders are only allowed to cross a roadway at a 90-degree angle when it is safe to do so.
The agency also urged riders to wear a helmet whenever operating an OHV.
CHP said operators should never ride under the influence, noting that DUI laws apply to OHV riders both on and off the highway.
