Would it come as a surprise to learn that Los Angeles Rams receiver Puka Nacua leads the NFL in receptions and receiving yards after three weeks?
Probably not, considering he’s caught 29 receptions for 333 yards. While he doesn’t have a receiving touchdown yet, Nacua does have one rushing score.
Part of his success is because of volume: quarterback Matthew Stafford has targeted Nacua 35 times this year, which ranks second among pass-catchers through three weeks. But Nacua is also extremely efficient when he runs routes.
Nacua is one of the only two receivers this season with a yards per run route of more than 4.00. His 4.32 YPRR ranks second behind Seattle Seahawks receiver Jaxon Smith-Ngiba, who has a YPRR of 4.82 and the league-leading 37 targets on the year, per Fantasy Points Data.
What’s remarkable about this stat, though, is how far away the rest of the NFL is from Nacua and JSN. No other pass-catcher has a YPRR over 2.75, with the next-closest to those two being Zay Flowers. Even Nacua’s running mate, Davante Adams, ranks No. 11 with a YPRR of 2.42.
This is the grandeur of Nacua and a big reason why Stafford relies on him so frequently in the passing game. He is running routes that have the potential to pick up yards and extend drives. Case in point: Nacua’s 18 receptions for a first down lead the NFL by two.
Sean McVay is also scheming Nacua perfectly for this offseason. He’s set up to succeed on a play-by-play basis and keeps the offense churning. So while Kyren Williams is the battering ram on the ground and Adams is the big-play man-to-man threat on the outside, Nacua can get the job done on the inside and find ways to keep the ball moving when the Rams need it.
