The Minnesota Vikings have become a new landing spot for former San Francisco 49ers running backs.

Former 49ers undrafted free agent RB Jordan Mason was traded there this offseason, and now undrafted rookie Corey Kiner is joining the Vikings after spending the offseason with San Francisco. Kiner suffered an ankle injury in the 49ers’ second preseason game and was placed on IR before getting waived with an injury designation.

It’s a little surprising the 49ers didn’t try to keep Kiner around. He was impressive in his limited preseason action and his success came while fellow rookie Jordan James, a fifth-round pick, missed time with a broken finger. Kiner ripped off 68 rushing yards on 12 carries and forced four missed tackles according to Pro Football Focus. He also had a pair of runs for 10-plus yards.

Kiner went down with his injury in Week 2 of the preseason and keeping him on the 90-man roster at that point was difficult for the 49ers with so many other injured players on the team. The club had Christian McCaffrey, Isaac Guerendo and James looking primed to snag roster spots. They also wound up trading for Brian Robinson a few days after waiving Kiner. There wasn’t room to keep Kiner around so they reached an injury settlement and made him an unrestricted free agent. Now he’s set to join fellow former 49er Jordan Mason in Minnesota.
