The Visalia Police Department will conduct a DUI checkpoint on Friday.

Checkpoint locations are selected using data on past impaired-driving crashes, police said.

Authorities said impaired driving can result not only from alcohol but also from prescription or over-the-counter medications.

While medical and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal.

First-time DUI offenders face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license, officials said.

The checkpoint is funded through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, administered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
