President Donald Trump announced plans to levy heavy financial penalties against California following a transgender student’s dual championship wins at the state track and field finals over the weekend, USA Today reported.

The president took to Truth Social early Monday, warning of “large scale fines” after AB Hernandez secured first place in both high jump and triple jump events. “Biological Male competed in California Girls State Finals, WINNING BIG, despite the fact that they were warned by me not to do so,” Trump posted at 12:56 a.m. ET.

The president called out Governor Gavin Newsom directly, writing, “As Governor Gavin Newscum fully understands, large scale fines will be imposed!!!”

Federal Pressure Mounts

The Department of Justice escalated tensions Sunday, giving California schools until June 9 to abandon a 2012 policy permitting transgender students to compete according to their gender identity. Harmeet Dhillon, assistant attorney general for civil rights, contended the practice violates the 14th Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause.

“Scientific evidence shows that upsetting the historical status quo and forcing girls to compete against males would deprive them of athletic opportunities and benefits because of their sex,” Dhillon stated in correspondence to California schools.

Trump previously threatened to withhold federal funding if his February executive order barring transgender athletes from women’s sports isn’t enforced. The administration has already filed suit against Maine over similar policies.

California remains among 22 states permitting transgender athletes to participate based on gender identity. Notably, Newsom recently acknowledged that allowing transgender athletes in girls’ sports is “deeply unfair” during a podcast appearance with conservative Charlie Kirk.
