A Springfield Township police officer in central Ohio discovered a pet raccoon named “Chewy” sitting in the driver’s seat with a glass methamphetamine pipe in its mouth during a routine traffic stop on Monday.
Officer Austin Branham initiated the stop after noticing the vehicle’s registered owner had an active warrant and suspended license.
“While our officers are trained to expect the unexpected, finding a raccoon holding a meth pipe is a first!” the department stated after releasing body camera footage showing Chewy emerging from the car.
Multiple Drugs Found During Vehicle Search
The search uncovered further contraband including methamphetamine, crack cocaine, and three used methamphetamine pipes in other parts of the vehicle, according to police reports.
Authorities arrested 55-year-old Victoria Vidal, the car’s owner, charging her with drug possession and three counts of drug paraphernalia. She was also cited for driving with a suspended license. Officials indicated Vidal might face additional charges for crack cocaine possession pending laboratory results from the state Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
Police confirmed the raccoon was unharmed during the incident. They also verified that Vidal possessed the necessary documentation to legally own the exotic pet. While Ohio permits raccoon ownership, the practice is heavily regulated and requires specific permits.
