Fresno’s rainfall for the season might climb up to about normal after this week as the region is pummeled by winter storms, National Weather Service meteorologist David Spector said Monday morning.

The forecast for the Valley is 1 to 2 inches of rain from Monday through Wednesday, with heavier rainfall Monday and Tuesday and showers on Wednesday.

In the Sierra foothills, the forecast is for 2 to 4 inches of rain, and in the higher Sierra 3 to 7 inches of rain, up to about 8,000 feet where several feet of snow may fall, Spector said.

The central Sierra is under a winter storm warning through Wednesday, including Shaver Lake.

Morning travelers in the Valley should be prepared for patchy fog.

Thanksgiving Forecast: Sunshine

While Thanksgiving Day weather will be partly sunny, shoppers waiting in line for Black Friday sales better bring an umbrella, because there’s a possibility of more showers starting Thursday evening, Spector said.

The storm that was forecast for Fresno this past weekend fizzled out when the weather pattern changed and the moisture stayed to the north, Spector said.

Monday’s storm, however, is taking dead aim on the Valley, he said: “It looks like this one’s going to hit us. So, some pretty good rainfall.”

Before Monday’s storm, Fresno’s seasonal rain total was 0.79 of an inch, almost a half-inch below normal, he said. The rain season begins Oct. 1 and ends Sept. 30.

“I think after tomorrow they’re going to be all caught up,” Spector said.

Temperatures in Fresno will remain in the upper 50s until the weekend, when they are forecast to climb into the lower 60s, he said. Starting Wednesday the overnight lows will drop back into the 40s.

The forecast for Fresno is: Monday through Wednesday, high of 57; overnight lows Monday, 54, Tuesday, 48, and Wednesday, 44; Thursday and Friday, high of 59 and overnight low of 45; Saturday, high of 61 and overnight low of 45; and Sunday, high of 63 and overnight low of 44.
