A new study reveals that Fresno boasts one of the fastest car commutes in the nation, ranking fourth among major U.S. cities. According to an analysis by The Wall Street Journal, Fresno’s average commute time is just 22.9 minutes, with traffic moving at an average speed of 26.2 mph.
The study, which examined federal data and ride-share information from Lyft, ranked cities based on overall travel time and speed. Columbus, Ohio, topped the list, followed by Las Vegas and Memphis, Tennessee.
“Just getting around town is very simple,” said Vahid Behzadi, a commuter in Fort Worth, Texas, which also ranked high for speedy commutes. “It’s a big city, but it’s not overwhelmed with traffic.”
Factors contributing to faster commutes include visionary urban planning, efficient public transit, and smaller populations on larger roadways. Memphis, for instance, implemented advanced traffic signal coordination, reducing average travel times by about 20%.

The study found that shaving just three minutes off a round-trip commute three days a week can save a worker 13 hours annually. This time savings is significant for many Americans who cite commuting as a top concern when returning to offices.
While some cities like New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles still struggle with lengthy commute times, others have seen improvements. Washington, D.C., Seattle, and Charlotte, N.C., show less time lost to delays compared to 2019, reflecting a shift to remote and hybrid work models.
