The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office will break ground Wednesday on its memorial for officers killed in the line of duty.

At the Area Two substation at 1129 N. Armstrong Ave., the Fresno Sheriff Sergeant’s Association will mark the beginning of work on the Fresno Sheriff’s Memorial.

The event will begin at 9 a.m.

The project dates back to 2021 when the association board asked members what the group wanted from leadership, according to the memorial website.

“We believe that our causes should support those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, their families, and the organizations that support and honor them,” the website states.

Once completed, the memorial will feature a wall of honor, a garden, a perpetual flame, and a lion resting atop a tomb — a symbol of law enforcement protecting its citizens.

“We are excited to break ground on the Fresno Sheriff Memorial, which will be a true treasure for our community and the families who have lost loved ones in the line of duty,” said Fresno County Sheriff John Zanoni. “This project is possible thanks to the hundreds of volunteers, from both within and outside our agency, who are working with the Fresno Sheriff’s Memorial Foundation, dedicating thousands of hours of their time to ensure this endeavor is a success.”
