IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi strongly criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in recent security discussions for his failure to devise and announce a post-war strategy for governing Gaza, according to the Times of Israel.

Halevi emphasized the necessity of establishing a non-Hamas governing body in Gaza to prevent repeated military campaigns aimed at dismantling Hamas infrastructure. Other senior IDF officials also urged political leaders to make decisions and formulate a clear strategy. Cabinet members warned Netanyahu that Israel’s indecision was putting lives at risk.

In another incident, Netanyahu clashed with Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar over strategic planning. Netanyahu expressed surprise that Bar had held discussions with Defense Minister Yoav Gallant without involving him. Netanyahu asserted his authority over strategic deliberations, prompting a rebuttal from Gallant, who argued it was their duty to prepare for such meetings.

The IDF has resumed operations in Jabaliya and Zeitoun neighborhoods of Gaza due to intelligence indicating Hamas regrouping. Netanyahu’s government has been criticized for its reluctance to plan for post-war governance in Gaza. Despite calls to involve the Palestinian Authority, Netanyahu opposes it, claiming they are no different from Hamas in their refusal to recognize Israel.

Biden Urges Netanyahu to Consider Post-War Governance

U.S. President Joe Biden has urged Netanyahu to consider post-war governance in Gaza. Netanyahu vaguely suggested a civilian administration with support from regional countries like the UAE and Saudi Arabia. However, UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed rejected the idea, stating Netanyahu lacks the authority to implement it.

Biden mentioned that five Arab countries are willing to aid in Gaza’s reconstruction and transition to a two-state solution, without specifying them. The war in Gaza erupted after Hamas’s October 7 attack, resulting in casualties and hostages.
