President Joe Biden expressed his disappointment over Chinese President Xi Jinping’s decision not to attend the upcoming G20 summit in India. China announced that Premier Li Qiang will head the nation’s delegation at the Delhi summit.

The relationship between the U.S. and China remains strained, despite numerous diplomatic efforts from Washington to restore dialogue. The nations are at odds on various issues, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, human rights in Xinjiang and Hong Kong, territorial claims to Taiwan and the South China Sea, and economic restrictions blocking Beijing’s access to high-tech components.

In the meantime, Xi Jinping continues to position Beijing as a leader of the developing world, advocating for an alternative to the Washington-led world order.
