Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer is up and walking, albeit gingerly.
Dyer attended memorial services for former Pelco owner David McDonald on Thursday (Jan. 24) at the Saroyan Theatre and chatted with GV Wire about his back surgery.
“I feel good. I can’t wait to get back. I look forward to putting the uniform on.” — Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer, who is recovering from back surgery
He underwent two days of major back surgery in Dec. 27-28 in Beverly Hills to alleviate 20 years of problems. In the nine hours of surgery, doctors fused five vertebrae in the lumbar area.“They put a number of screws inside of me and built a cage around my lower lumbar. I feel good. I can’t wait to get back. I look forward to putting the uniform on,” Dyer said.
Recovery Process
Dyer said post-surgery pain lasted 17 days. He plans to start physical therapy in the upcoming weeks.
“I’ve been pushing pretty hard to get back, walking every day. I feel good. I went into the surgery in good physical condition, so that helps on the recovery side,” Dyer said.
He did not provide a specific target date of when he would return but did say it would be in a matter of weeks.
Deputy Chief Pat Farmer has been acting chief in Dyer’s absence.
