Two Fresno synagogues will hold vigils Tuesday night (Oct. 30) to honor the memories of the 11 people murdered in Pittsburgh on Saturday.
Temple Beth Israel (6622 N. Maroa, Fresno) will hold “A Gathering of Peace and Understanding” event led by Rabbi Rick Winer.
The Islamic Cultural Center of Fresno will also participate. The event starts at 7 p.m.
“While the Jewish community has experienced this horrific attack and centuries of anti-Semitism, we stand together with our brothers and sisters in the many communities that continue to be marginalized,” Winer said in an email announcing the event.
Also at 7 p.m., Rabbi Levi Zirkind will lead a “Community Solidarity and Unity Prayer Service” at Chabad Fresno (1227 E. Shepherd, Fresno).
“There can only be one response to such a brutal crime. We will counter the now infamous words “All Jews must die” with “All Jews must LIVE”!! But, not only must we live; we must continue to live as Jews, for this was not merely an attack on Jews of Pittsburgh but on Jews worldwide,” Chabad wrote in an email to parishioners.
Mayor Lee Brand plans to attend the Temple Beth Israel event, if not both, according to his City Hall staff.
