The latest NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll reveals a divided American public over Israel’s response to the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas.

The survey shows a significant increase in the number of Democrats who believe Israel’s response has been excessive. The poll also highlights a clear divide on whether the U.S. should fund the wars in Israel and Ukraine, or neither, with younger Americans and nonwhites advocating for a more inward focus.

The poll also reveals a lack of confidence in President Biden’s handling of the Israel-Hamas conflict, with his approval rating dropping to 42%. The survey additionally indicates that the majority of Americans believe the U.S. political system is functional, but the problem lies with members of Congress.

The poll also shows that the public wants compromise in Congress to avoid a government shutdown. However, if a shutdown does occur, the majority of respondents would blame the Republicans.
