The Fresno Police Department will conduct DUI patrols Saturday from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m., targeting drivers suspected of being under the influence.

Police reminded drivers that impairment can be caused by substances other than alcohol. Some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs can interfere with driving, and motorists should follow directions and read warning labels before getting behind the wheel.

Although medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal in California, driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal, police said.

Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended license.

The patrols are funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
