Three people were detained after a gun was fired on the Manteca High School campus during a football game Friday night, prompting the game to end early, the Manteca Police Department said.
Manteca High School was hosting Chavez High School of Stockton when officers heard reports of gunfire outside the football stadium near the gym area at about 9:27 p.m.
Six Manteca police officers had been assigned to the game, and officers at the stadium and patrol officers responded to the scene.
Police said three people were detained in connection with the shooting. Officers located shell casings on the ground.
Investigators believe the gun was fired into the air, and no one was struck by the gunfire, police said.
According to police, a physical altercation involving people outside the stadium preceded the shooting. Police did not release additional details about the people detained or what led to the altercation, citing the ongoing investigation.
The game was stopped with about four minutes remaining in the third quarter after people began fleeing in response to the gunfire, police said.
No injuries were reported.
