The Madera Police Department will conduct a DUI checkpoint Saturday night at an undisclosed location in the city.
The checkpoint is scheduled from 7:30 p.m. to 2 a.m., according to police.
Officials said checkpoint locations are selected based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. The department said the primary purpose of DUI checkpoints is to improve public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the road.
Police reminded drivers that impairment is not limited to alcohol and can include some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs. The department also noted that while medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal.
According to Madera police, drivers arrested for a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended driver’s license.
The checkpoint program is funded through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety via the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
