Fresno police will conduct a distracted driving enforcement operation Saturday aimed at cracking down on violations of California’s hands-free cell phone law.

The Fresno Police Department said officers will be watching for drivers holding phones or electronic devices while operating a vehicle, including talking, texting or using apps. Using a handheld phone while driving carries a fine, and a second violation within 36 months adds a point to a driver’s record.

Police urged motorists to pull over to a safe location if they need to make a call or enter directions and to silence or store phones out of reach before driving.

The operation is funded by a California Office of Traffic Safety grant through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
