James Myron Mitchell eluded the law for nearly six months in 2023 after murdering a man standing outside a house in Tulare. He used a rifle to kill his victim from 90 feet away.
Now Mitchell, 23, will spend the remainder of his life in prison, the Tulare County District Attorney’s office said.

He was sentenced Friday in Tulare County Superior Court to life without parole after a jury convicted him on Sept. 3 of first-degree murder.
Mitchell, of Tipton, murdered 54-year-old John White III after messaging him to come outside of the residence. The killing took place at about 2 a.m. at the Valley Oak Apartment Homes at West Street and Cross Avenue.
When police arrived, they found White bleeding from the gunshot wound. He was declared dead at the scene.
Detectives got the tip they needed to solve the homicide by reviewing video surveillance.
Mitchell fled but was later captured near Chattanooga, Tennessee, by the U.S. Marshals Service.
Assistant district attorney Sean Sangree and deputy district attorney Michelle Payne prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Tulare Police Department.
