The San Francisco 49ers may have started their 2025 campaign with a 2-0 record, but they had to win the second contest with backup quarterback Mac Jones under center after their usual starter, Brock Purdy, suffered a toe injury during their Week 1 victory over the Seattle Seahawks.

While Jones looked more than serviceable in his 49ers debut, completing 66.7% of his passes for 279 yards and three touchdowns in the win over the New Orleans Saints, everyone is wondering when Purdy will return to take back his job.

Speaking on “The Rich Eisen Show,” NFL insider Albert Breer provided an updated timeline for Purdy to come back.

“I was told two to three weeks,” Breer told Eisen. “Maybe it’s one of those deals where he gets back out there on the practice field and does light work at the end of the week. But my sense is that they want to sit him out at least two weeks, and maybe the third week.

“And this is the less serious version of turf toe than what Joe Burrow has. But it sounds like he’s going to be okay.”

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan called the injury turf toe after reported questions about it last week, but it appears to be different than what will force Burrow to have surgery and miss several months.

Breer went on to say that he estimates Purdy will be back on the field in Week 4 or 5.

San Francisco takes on the Arizona Cardinals in Week 3, the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 4 and the Los Angeles Rams in Week 5. With two division battles in that three-week stretch, these games will be important, and the 49ers will want to have their best quarterback under center.

Jones held his own on Sunday against the Saints, but Purdy has had higher peaks and has sustained his success for longer than Jones has in his career.
