A 68-year-old Fresno man was found dead Monday morning after becoming separated from his hiking group near Courtright Reservoir, according to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office.

Robert Gretsch was reported missing just before 9 p.m. Sunday. Authorities were told that he was an experienced hiker equipped with the necessary supplies to withstand the elements.

Search and Rescue teams worked overnight and into Monday morning. Around 10 a.m., a hiker discovered a man down in the area and used a GPS device to relay coordinates to authorities.

The sheriff’s helicopter, EAGLE One, was dispatched and deputies recovered Gretsch’s body.

Deputies said there were no visible injuries and the death may have been due to a medical emergency.

The body was transported to the Fresno County Coroner’s Office.
