A 12-year-old boy was airlifted to a hospital Monday evening after sustaining major hand injuries from an illegal firework, authorities said.

Deputies with the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office responded around 6:30 p.m. to the 30600 block of Markham in Visalia, where they found the injured child, officials said.

The boy was flown to a nearby hospital for immediate treatment.

Detectives remained at the scene to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Sheriff Mike Boudreaux issued a reminder about the dangers of fireworks ahead of the Fourth of July holiday saying accidents like this are preventable.
