Fresno-area travelers looking for a cheaper way to get to Los Angeles, Sacramento and other California cities have a new option with the return of Megabus service later this month.

The low-cost express bus company is reentering the California market after abruptly ending service in the Golden State almost 15 years ago. The company will begin offering three daily trips from Fresno, north and south, starting May 15.

“We’re excited to be back in California,” said Megabus spokesman Colin Emberson in a news release. “Our customers have eagerly been awaiting our return and we’re happy to be able to provide a new network of travel options just in time for the summer rush.”

In addition to its new California routes, Megabus offers service to more than 100 cities across the United States and Canada.

Fares as Low as $1

Megabus boasts of its affordable fares aboard “luxury double deckers” offering reclining seats with available power outlets, panoramic windows, and restrooms. Some seats on the upper deck and behind the driver on the lower deck include a table.

The company is known for offering one-way fares for as low as $1.

Experts say the key to snagging the limited number of the ultra-low priced tickets available is to book early. A search using the Megabus online booking tool showed $1 fares (plus a $3.99 booking fee) from Fresno to San Francisco available on travel starting July 1, for instance.

Other fares generally range from $20 – $60 per person, each way.

Megabus does not always operate out of fixed bus terminals in the cities it serves. Instead, travelers from Fresno will meet their bus in a Carl’s Jr. parking lot on West Shaw Ave. In Sacramento, the bus stops near a Pony Express statue in the Old Town area of the city.

Each traveler is permitted to bring 1 piece of luggage and a carry-on bag. Riders are also allowed to bring snacks and non-alcoholic drinks for their trip. Megabus generally travels non-stop between the cities it serves, though the company’s website says buses may stop at a rest are during trips of five hours or more.

Tickets are available for purchase at us.megabus.com.
