Where does Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer stand on the billions of dollars on school bonds in the Fresno area?

He’ll tell you about Measure Q, a $698 million bond to benefit the State Center Community College District.

He’s in favor.

“It has some student housing funding in there and it also has some moneys that can be utilized to shore up what we need at the first responder campus,” Dyer told GV Wire on Wednesday.

He is also impressed with the new science, and child development buildings.

“I believe that they have done a good job in taking those dollars and converting them into incredible projects. I also saw the work that they did over at Clovis Community College,” Dyer said. “The technology that they have is incredible. So I think they’re going to make good use of that money.”

Despite its name, Clovis Community College is in the city of Fresno.

If Measure Q passes, property taxes will increase by $20 per $100,000 of assessed value.

Dyer Silent on Other Fresno-Area Bonds

Several other school districts — with at least some voters in the city of Fresno —are asking voters to approve bonds. They include:

  • Measure A in Clovis Unified ($400 million)
  • Measure H in Fresno Unified ($500 million)
  • Measure M in Sanger Unified ($175 million)
  • Measure X in Central Unified ($109 million)

Combined with Measure Q, that is $1.8 billion in bond requests. Bonds needs 55% approval in the election concluding Nov. 5.

Dyer won’t say publicly if he supports, or how he will vote on the Clovis Unified bond that appears on his ballot.

“I haven’t taken a position on any of the unified school bonds, but I did on State Center, and I will probably stay that way,” Dyer said.
