A driver struck and killed a steer on a rural road between Shaver and Huntington Lakes shortly after passing a livestock warning sign, CHP Fresno said Monday in a social media post.

Large numbers of livestock have been seen grazing along Highway 168 in that area in recent weeks.

The incident occurred in an area designated as “Open Range,” where livestock are legally allowed to roam freely.

Drivers in these regions are warned they may encounter livestock in or near the roadway at any time, according to officials.

Authorities are urging motorists to exercise caution in these areas and to report any livestock seen on the road. “If you see livestock in the road, we want to know about it,” was said in the post. “Call 9-1-1 immediately. We respond to identify and remove hazards to prevent further incidents.”

Officials stressed the importance of remaining at the scene and notifying authorities if a driver hits an animal. Leaving the scene of an accident involving livestock can endanger other drivers, they said.
