The Fresno Police Department is conducting a traffic safety operation Saturday from noon to 10 p.m., focusing on dangerous driver behaviors that threaten the safety of pedestrians and cyclists.

Officers will focus on speeding, illegal turns, failing to yield or provide the right of way to bicyclists and pedestrians, and running stop signs or red lights.

Fresno PD Safety Tips

The department offers these reminders so that drivers and pedestrians reduce injuries and accidents.

— Pedestrians are encouraged to be predictable by using crosswalks and avoiding sudden movements into traffic. Drivers need at least 90 feet to stop when traveling at 30 mph.

— To ensure safety, pedestrians should wear light-colored or reflective clothing, particularly during dawn, dusk, and nighttime, and must always be aware of approaching vehicles.

— Drivers must follow the speed limit, slow at intersections, and be ready to stop for pedestrians at both marked and unmarked crosswalks. They should avoid blocking crosswalks while waiting at intersections or preparing to make right-hand turns, and must never drive impaired.

— Bicyclists should obey traffic laws, use hand signals, use lights at night, and always wear a helmet. They must ride in the direction of traffic and follow the same rules as slow-moving vehicles. When available, use bike lanes unless making a left turn, right turn, or passing. Avoid the door zone by keeping a safe distance from parked cars.

— Bicyclists must yield to pedestrians and give right-of-way to walkers at both marked and unmarked crosswalks at intersections.
